Roman Naval Museum

The Roman Naval Museum of Albenga is fascinating and exhibits ancient artifacts, most of which come from the wreck of the Roman era lying in the seabed of the Gallinara Island, in front of Albenga.

Dear friends of camping in Liguria, today we want to talk about a nice visit to do alone, with friends or with your family during your holiday in Ceriale, especially in winter.
This is the Roman Naval Museum in Albenga, a town bordering on Ceriale, a few minutes from our Camping Baciccia.
The Roman Naval Museum in Albenga is very fascinating, because it is housed in Palazzo Peloso Cepolla, a building from the early 1600s.
He was born in 1950 following the discovery of a cargo ship, destined for the transport of goods, of the beginnings of the 1st century BC. in the depths of the Gallinara Island, which is part of the Municipality of Albenga.
If you want to do a real "dive" in a very remote past, you're in the right place!

The largest Roman transport ship in the Mediterranean

Here you can admire a large number of wine amphorae, the remains of the hull and materials recovered during the various excavation campaigns.
Consider that the amphorae were placed faithfully according to the original arrangement on the ship.
The amphorae contained wine of the current Campania (Italy) destined for France and Spain.
In addition, black-painted ceramics and other types of pottery were exported.
The wreck of the Roman ship is located one mile from the coast, about 40 meters deep, right in front of the ancient city of Albingaunum (Albenga).
Numerous underwater excavation campaigns have allowed to document the elements of the load and the construction characteristics of the hull.
Among other things, it emerged that it is the largest Roman transport ship known to date in the Mediterranean.

Other types of finds at the Roman Naval Museum

The Roman Naval Museum of Albenga also houses other finds from the wreck of another Roman ship in the waters of Diano Marina.
In addition, at Palazzo Peloso Cepolla you can admire the collection of Savona ceramic vases from the Ancient Pharmacy of the Hospital of Albenga.
This includes about one hundred decorated vases, produced in Savona and Albissola between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.
The visit ends with the permanent exhibition "Prehistory in Val Pennavaira" with finds covering a time line of 15,000 years. Within this time frame, different cultures have followed: groups of hunters, the first farmers-breeders, the age of metals up to the threshold of history.
