Ceriale, a bit of its history

Ceriale, a bit of its history

Today we talk about Ceriale, which enjoys a beautiful location that has made it a modern seaside resort of the Western Ligurian Riviera.

Ceriale combines tourist activity with agriculture, flowers and horticulture.
The pleasant sea promenade of Ceriale offers ample green spaces and a beautiful panoramic view of the gulf.  Monte Croce (541mt) rises behind the sea promenade of Ceriale.

According to its legend, Ceriale takes its name from the goddess Cerere, because at the time of the Roman domination in the area there was a lot of wheat.

Probably the nucleus was born thanks to the passage of the Via Julia Augusta, right next to our Camping Baciccia, and was built as a settlement by the Romans, as evidenced by an ancient burial.

In antiquity Ceriale was a village of fishermen and farmers near the nearby Albenga, with which it crossed history.

It passed to the Republic of Genoa in the fourteenth century, after being the property of the Bishop.Unfortunately, in 1637 the village of Ceriale, devoid of fortifications, was destroyed by the Turks, who made a real massacre, forcing most of the survivors to slavery.

Consequently, Genoa raised the guard level. Ceriale with commitment and dedication was rebuilt, rebelling also in Genoa in 1764, due to heavy taxes.

Later, with the passage of the Napoleonic troops, Ceriale became an independent municipality in the Montenotte Department and was later annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Ceriale was a village rich in art and culture.
Unfortunately, with the sacking of the Saracens, almost everything was destroyed, leaving very little evidence before 1637, such as the great Bastion, which dates back to 1564 and located in Piazza della Vittoria, just in front of the sea promenade, near the pier .

We will deepen in one of the next news, to give you some ideas to visit our beautiful Ceriale.
