As well as sea, swimming pool and relaxation, Ceriale also has a wealth of highly appreciated historical and archaeological sites, such as the ancient Via Julia Augusta, which is very close to us.
The Via Julia Augusta in fact, starts from the neighbouring town of Albenga and leads to Alassio.
This is an authentic archaeological jewel. Constructed in the 13th century BC at the request of Emperor Augustus, this Roman road completed the connection between Rome and Arles, on the Southern coast of France.
Along the entire Via Julia Augusta you can still see the remains of the eight monuments of Roman origin, the amphitheater, the Pillar and the numerous funerary sites in which some significant glass objects of great beauty have been discovered (on display in Albenga at the Palazzo Oddo within the permanent exhibition "Magiche Trasparenze").
Via Julia Augusta: a walk for everybody!
Everybody, young and not so young, can enjoy an agreeable walk through this splendid open-air museum, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub, with breathtaking views over the sea and the superb Gallinara Island. It’s really impressive!
It’s possible to continue the walk along to the promontory that dominates Alassio where you will find the Romanesque church of Santa Croce. This important church was mentioned by Pope Alexander III in 1169 as a priory belonging to the Benedictine monastery of the Gallinara Island.
A few hundred meters away you can also see the church of Sant'Anna. There are no certain references regarding the date of construction, but it was probably built around the year 1000 A.D.
The information boards located along the entire route make it possible to delve further into the history of the Via Julia Augusta and its Roman remains.
We can recommend this wonderful archaeological walk to everyone!
